What was the task?
The task for this assessment was to write up and film a 90 second depict video, which also included guide lines such as paper work that entitled the film crew to have access to certain areas around the college with permission from teachers.
What was your idea?
The plot for our video followed a child who was inspired by a real superhero on television, leading to him attempting to do what the superhero can do - and failing to do so. The last straw for this is when he jumps off a building when trying to fly, resulting in him being in hospital and the doctor treating him is the superhero undercover.
'Cation: Do not try this at home' was filmed in and around the college premises, meaning that we made use of the setting that we had around us. An example of this is that we used a classroom for two different scenes: a bedroom and a hospital. The props in these scenes were the key elements that differentiated them. An example of this is in the hospital scene in which the mise-en-scene was very minimalist as the room was plain and the only significant props were the doctors coat and the stethoscope.
What planning documentation / processes did you have to complete and how much input did you have? Did you 'pull your weight'?
During the process of making the short film, we had to consider many different things, such as: Where should we film? What props do we want to use? How are we going to film certain scenes? We also had to plan out the documents that entitled us to filming.
I believe that i put a large input in the process of planning and creating the short. This is due to me filming many of the scenes and co-staring in the film. Throughout the process i also helped to develop the idea for the task and i helped to complete the paperwork. However, I feel as if I could have had a greater input in the group by helping with the editing process of the short.
Did your finished work reflect the planning you had completed?
We were very pleased with the final cut of our short and a lot of elements of the original plan reflected in this. However, throughout the process we added certain parts -such as the ending scene where the doctor is discovered to be the superhero- this therefore made the short better by giving it a more rounded ending. Overall, we believed that the improvements from our original plan made the short better as it ended up being longer and funnier than we had first expected it to be.
What changes did you make from your planning and why?
Some of the shots in the film were slightly blurred or not focused properly so retakes for certain shots had to be done as it ruined the quality of the video, plans for certain rooms to be used couldn't be done as we were denied access to certain rooms and areas so we had to improvise for the story of the video, we fixed these problems by thinking of extra areas that we knew we could use and thinking about what angles to take the shots in.
What do you think is the most successful aspect of the project? Print screen at least 2 stills from your video and explain your choices fully.
This scene of the video went very well considering it wasnt 100% planned at the end of our planning, in this scene Will (playing the wannabe superhero) was meant to be seen on a roof, for the planning of the scene a dummy taking wills place was meant to be seen thrown off the roof making it look like Will had actually jumped off the roof and landing on the floor as he cant fly, this couldnt be done as the scene would have been dangerous and for the video would have to be a perfect scene, instead of the roof idea we labled walls that Will could jump off giving the impression to the audience that he was more high up than what he really was with the help of certian angles and camera spots that helped make the scene look more real, with little planing towards the second attempt of the scene with more paper work and extra time it still worked out perfectly, this the the final scene of the wannabe heros failed montage so it had to look perfect and be funny at the same time.
What would you change or do differently if you were to undertake the task again? Use at least 2 print screens here too.
With the recording of the mellowman scenes the news scene was firt out of the 2 scenes, Dalton (mellowman) doesnt have the M symbol on his chest and has a different colour shirt on, in the hospital scene mellowman unbuttons his coat to show the M symbol as it turns out the docotr is mellowman, to catch a more of the superhero undercover vibe i would want to retake that scene so that people get more of a feel about who he is with the help of the M symbol on his chest.
What did you enjoy most about the project?
I mostly enjoyed the creation of the video, i liked planning what was gonna happen, who was gonna play who, agreeing on certain points to make the video better and adding in ideas from the whole group, creating the video was the best part as it shows how creative someone can be when given the chance so the making of the video was the best part.
