Television advert analysis

Television advert analysis

1. What is the ad for / what is the message?
This advert is advertising the song 'Come together' by the Beatles, the producer of the advert is amazon music, the message of the advert is to draw in the primary audience (music lovers, teen/young adult ages) to pay and use there music streaming service.

2. Who is the target audience?  (refer to target audience throughout - it is vital)
The target (primary) audience for this advert would be music lovers round the ages of 15 to 25, the reason for the younger generation being more interested in this video is because its all animated and this draws in the younger generation, this may want teenagers to pay for amazon music giving them a big profit as most teenagers like to listen to music.
The secondary audience would be more of the older generation, from 30 to round about 60+, the reason is because the song being played is come together by the Beatles which would of been more to there time with music, them re hearing the song will possibly want them to buy amazon music in order to hear it more and start there own playlist.

3. When was the advert aired / when would you expect it to be aired?
The official 'Amazon music' published the video on YouTube on Nov 18, 2019, which means it would have been on aired on TV round that time, the advert would have most likely been on from round 12 till dinner time as that's when most of the primary audience would have been watching the tv, the advert may have also been aired on music channels.

4. What form does the ad take?
The advert is a some what of a series from amazon music that show their audience what great music (modern or classic) they play, it is an animated advert with special effects at the end, the adverts animation involves a microphone, a bass guitar, an electric guitar and drums all shown playing to the beat of the song in the advert.

5. What style is the ad / what persuasion techniques are used?
The adverts style is aimed at music, its also nostalgic to most viewers as listening to a very well known classic song that the whole family can dance to the song as it draws them in, the advert does contain celebrity endorsement as pictures of the band are shown on the front of there Abby road album cover, the company's main goal with the advert could have been they wanted the audience to participate to the song as it plays making them want to watch the advert more.

6. Does the ad follow AIDA? If so, how?
The way the advert attracts ATTENTION is from the company's choice of music Come Together by The Beatles, I believe this classic song would draw in the whole family with its good beat and its amazing animation off all instruments that helped create the song, its also giving the audience a taste of what good music it plays.

Amazon Music's INTEREST at the end of the video shows the viewers, its not only normal music its in HD and your able to stream high quality audio explaining you get what u pay for if you buy the product, the company itself is Amazon at a first which is one of the UKs biggest marketing brands ever, there service is much worth what's its priced at.

The DESIRE comes from the classic song being played, its a draw in to listen to music almost like the viewers have been hypnotised to listen to music but on amazon music, the audience puts in consideration when listening to the song they could tap there leg, nod there head or sing along to the song that's the draw in amazon wants for there advert because its catchy.

The ACTION taken from the advert is right near the end when the bass is about to drop the advert tells you ''A Voice Is All You Need'' this is telling the audience directly that they want people to sing along and have a good time listening to there music and that all the audience needs to do is sing with the help of amazon music, they can sing to there favourite songs.

7. Discuss the characteristics of products / services:
  • Benefits offered- The advert doesn't offer any benefits it only focuses on 1 band in the advert
  • Advantages over similar- The advert has no comment about prices or being more superior than other company's with the same product.
  • USP
  • Lifestyle appeal- Amazon music has made the advert based on a very well know classic band, this may be a good way to sell there product as they are known from mostly older and fairy younger generations making the song catchy to all ages and also the product of all ages too.

  • Brand identity- The company's brand name is eye catching as the company is very well know throughout the country as amazon is good with its advertising and the rate it sells its products, the little smile/ arrow below the word amazon is the company's logo it could mean that the company is always moving as it shows progress in the company. The company's colour choices can be from black, white, yellow and blue, theses colours can be seen as noticeable on an advert or billboard, the company's meaning from the advert is to give great high quality music to there customers.

8. Who is responsible for regulating this advert (and all advertising) in the UK?
The 2 company's responsible are ASA and CAP, there jobs are to monitor new and on going adverts to make sure they are suitable to be seen by the public, any advert goes under strict guidelines before it is released, the systems used for regulating adverts in the UK are called 'self-regulation' and 'co-regulation'.

9.  Analyse the codes and conventions of the advert's construction

  • Mise-en-scene & iconography- The mise-en-scene in the adverts brings up back to thee classic cover photo of the Beatles Abby road album giving the viewers a feel of how royal and classic this advert is. The icomography in the aadvert shows off he instruments played to create the song the viewer is listening to throughtout the advert adding more of a meaning to this classic advert making it feel more alive.

  • Angles- The camera shots used in the advert show an all 4 people body shot from a slightly high angle, this shot adds more detail to the lighting in the picture as there shadows are visable to the audience.

  • Shot types, framing & composition- the shot being taken in the picture is a wide/long shot. The camera used in the shot was a "Hasselblad camera with a 50mm wide-angle lens, aperture f22, at 1/500 seconds". (This picture is a plan from Paul McCartney on of The Beatles)
  • Sketch for the Abbey Road album cover photo shoot, 8 August 1969

  • Camera movement- The movement in the advert focuses on the key parts of the advert like all the instruments and the album cover of the song.

  • Iconography- at the very start of the advert we see a microphone, but in the first second we see what looks the the zebra crossing on the abbey road cover photo, this is very clever of the producers of the advert to do as its almost like a little 'Easter egg' to the audience.

  • Editing- The pace of the advert is quite quick, it goes to the beat of the song which makes it more luring and entertaining to the viewers, it skims through to every object used in the advert and lastly finishes up on a slow zoom out of the album cover picture

  • Lighting- The lighting used in the advert was used in a very special way, the way the scene is light up is by an old side light that maybe have been used back in the times from when the beatles were still together giving it that setting of feeling of the setting.

  • Soundtrack (music, sound fx & dialogue)- The Bealtes, Abby Road, Come Together

  • Graphics- the on screen image used in the advert tell us instantly who the adverts about, the type of music, the song and setting the adverts trying to give off, the image explains alot for the plot of the advert.

  • Special FX- The only special effects used in the picture was lighting only.

    Depict Evaluation

    What was the task?
The task for this assessment was to write up and film a 90 second depict video, which also included guide lines such as paper work that entitled the film crew to have access to certain areas around the college with permission from teachers.

    What was your idea?
The plot for our video followed a child who was inspired by a real superhero on television, leading to him attempting to do what the superhero can do - and failing to do so. The last straw for this is when he jumps off a building when trying to fly, resulting in him being in hospital and the doctor treating him is the superhero undercover.

'Cation: Do not try this at home' was filmed in and around the college premises, meaning that we made use of the setting that we had around us. An example of this is that we used a classroom for two different scenes: a bedroom and a hospital. The props in these scenes were the key elements that differentiated them. An example of this is in the hospital scene in which the mise-en-scene was very minimalist as the room was plain and the only significant props were the doctors coat and the stethoscope.
What planning documentation / processes did you have to complete and how much input did you have? Did you 'pull your weight'?
During the process of making the short film, we had to consider many different things, such as: Where should we film? What props do we want to use? How are we going to film certain scenes? We also had to plan out the documents that entitled us to filming.

I believe that i put a large input in the process of planning and creating the short. This is due to me filming many of the scenes and co-staring in the film. Throughout the process i also helped to develop the idea for the task and i helped to complete the paperwork. However, I feel as if I could have had a greater input in the group by helping with the editing process of the short.

Did your finished work reflect the planning you had completed?
We were very pleased with the final cut of our short and a lot of elements of the original plan reflected in this. However, throughout the process we added certain parts -such as the ending scene where the doctor is discovered to be the superhero- this therefore made the short better by giving it a more rounded ending. Overall, we believed that the improvements from our original plan made the short better as it ended up being longer and funnier than we had first expected it to be.

What changes did you make from your planning and why?
Some of the shots in the film were slightly blurred or not focused properly so retakes for certain shots had to be done as it ruined the quality of the video, plans for certain rooms to be used couldn't be done as we were denied access to certain rooms and areas so we had to improvise for the story of the video, we fixed these problems by thinking of extra areas that we knew we could use and thinking about what angles to take the shots in.

What do you think is the most successful aspect of the project? Print screen at least 2 stills from your video and explain your choices fully.

This scene of the video went very well considering it wasnt 100% planned at the end of our planning, in this scene Will (playing the wannabe superhero) was meant to be seen on a roof, for the planning of the scene a dummy taking wills place was meant to be seen thrown off the roof making it look like Will had actually jumped off the roof and landing on the floor as he cant fly, this couldnt be done as the scene would have been dangerous and for the video would have to be a perfect scene, instead of the roof idea we labled walls that Will could jump off giving the impression to the audience that he was more high up than what he really was with the help of certian angles and camera spots that helped make the scene look more real, with little planing towards the second attempt of the scene with more paper work and extra time it still worked out perfectly, this the the final scene of the wannabe heros failed montage so it had to look perfect and be funny at the same time.

What would you change or do differently if you were to undertake the task again? Use at least 2 print screens here too.

With the recording of the mellowman scenes the news scene was firt out of the 2 scenes, Dalton (mellowman) doesnt have the M symbol on his chest and has a different colour shirt on, in the hospital scene mellowman unbuttons his coat to show the M symbol as it turns out the docotr is mellowman, to catch a more of the superhero undercover vibe i would want to retake that scene so that people get more of a feel about who he is with the help of the M symbol on his chest.

What did you enjoy most about the project?
I mostly enjoyed the creation of the video, i liked planning what was gonna happen, who was gonna play who, agreeing on certain points to make the video better and adding in ideas from the whole group, creating the video was the best part as it shows how creative someone can be when given the chance so the making of the video was the best part.

    Requirements for Production

90 seconds depict video: Caution do not try this at home

What type of media product did you produce and what was it for? How did you distribute it?

We produced a short film of 90 seconds on a website called https://www.depict.org/.

What other types of moving image media products are there? What different distribution methods are there?
    • Feature film- firstly viewed in cinemas, depending on the popularity or the amount spent on the production of the film.
    • short film- any motion picture which isnt long enough to be classed as a feature film.
    • Adverts- an announcement of a new product or business that may be coming out to the public.

    Finance and sources of funding

What sources of funding exist for film, TV and other moving image productions?
    • Self funders- the money is provided by yourself (the director of the film) to help with the costs of making the film.
    • crowed funding- the practice of funding a project by raising money from a lot of people who all give out a small amount of money, mostly via the internet.
    • branded films (product placement)- a practice of which manufacturers of goods of a service gain exposure for their products by paying for them to feature in the film or TV show as a chance of promoting there company
    • advertising- the profession of producing advertisements for the company benefit of selling more of their products giving them more money.

Requirements for any production-i.e., what will the money be spent on?

cameras and equipment, sound equipment, props that will be used in the film/ video, areas bought or rented out so that the crew can film, people that will be staring or being shown in the film will get a cut for there work in the film, special effects or computer work that has to be added into the film

    Requirements (cont'd)

For our depict project we had to obtain a 90 second video of whatever our group had thought of, filming the video, adding sound and effects to the video and editing the video for it to be published to the colleges YouTube channel.

Personnel: Talent (actors) and crew (the production team) that work in a media production.

    • low budget film will have little or no funding put into it, low budget filming is most common with first time filmmakers as it shows what talent they can produce, the crew and film set for for small projects like these can be scarce so makeup artists, film crew members, producers and even the directer have to multi task in order to help with the production of the film, an example of a low budget film is the Blair witch project filmed in 1999.

    • A television programme can be filmed many genres such as a documentary's, horror, comedy, si-fi and drama, depending on how well the programmes views are on its certain channel it can bring in more money for the station that its being aired on, to make and set up a TV programme certain people are needed for certain jobs in the production of a TV show, a few of them can be a Director, Make-up artist, Production designer, Researcher, Writer and Screenwriter, just these few people help and are important with the creation of the show.
    • Hollywood feature films can take a while to fully plan out, film then edit, with big film makers like Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney studios that put so much money into there work theirs also a lot of everything going on, there will be really big film crew teams working on certain subjects while film making, camera operators, lighting, props and costume and editing, every actor has there own little team that helps out with getting them ready for a scene they have to be in, this could be makeup or costume fitting, every person is paid for with the amount the production company has given out.
Explain how you allow allocated work in your very small group. Who performed what role? did they have any experience of hat role before?

there were 2 main actors in our video were Dalton and Will, we had never played as superheros before this short film and the behind the scenes crew were Megan and Sydney, we all had to help out with planning out what our video would be about and to list out our locations to shoot at, all in all everyone was doing different jobs to help with the build up to our small film.

    Casting/other contributors:
List the various people that may contribute to the production of a media text, in addition to the crew?

Reporters, Journalists, photographer, camera, sound and lighting crews, editing room staff, sub editors, receptionists, library staff, graphics designer, care takers, factual programmers.

Time-What was the time frame and how well did you use your time?

we had 4 weeks as a limit to make our depict video and every lesson we had we always made sure we were prepped,we had something planned at the start and that everything was ready to go.

what happens when you do not meet deadlines in the professional media industry?
your reputation as producer or director gets flattened and you become unreliable as your work isn't 100%.

    Equipment/Facilities: what is needed?

How do you obtain equipment in professional moving image productions?

This website here offers a large amount of content for film makers, i looked for the most expensive priced cameras i could find online as with price comes the quality and that makes the movie better.

What equipment was available to you and your group?

we were given a camera, recorder, a boom mic at one point, headphones to record the sound, outfits, available rooms to film in.

most of the props and equipment was obtained from the collage i few items were from other peoples homes that were in our groups.

Location- where did you film, how did you get that location?

Location recces- is a piece of paper yo right your location ideas on so you have a plan on where to go and what shot is being filmed on that location.
    Location Recce – Holly's FMP

Location releases- is a signed piece of paper that grants the person access to that owners land so they are able to film on it.
Download FREE Film Location Release Form Template

how and why did you pick specific locations for your depict video?
our main locations were outside, a science lab and in the classroom, the reason why we chose these locations is because they had something to do with what was happening in the clip, the hero tried to climb a wall outside, he also tried to use mind powers in the science lap and the class room was used as a bedroom and hospital because if its bland wall we could use that to our advantage.

what logistical issues and risks did you face?
we firstly wanted to shoot a scene where a dummy was thrown off a building but because of health and safety rules that wasn't possible, for a few days we tried to book a room that we couldn't find the owner for so while that was going on we filmed other shots instead of that one, for our hospital scene we wanted to film in the medical room but we were not allowed access to the room but instead we used the classroom with its pale wall and a makeshift bed.

Material- equipment, crew and cast are needed to make a moving image text, where, how are they obtained?

list the types of materials you may need for a production?
    props, lights, cameras, actors/actresses, scripts

what fictional considerations are there when using certain materials?
when making something that already has been made, you can change it up a little or right from what someone has told u or written out
